Empathy

Empathy is the ability to understand what other people are thinking and feeling. Understanding other people is important for at least two reasons.

First, we have to understand what the other person wants so that we can set mutually acceptable (or win-win) goals. Good communicators are always looking for solutions that benefit everyone. This reduces wasteful conflict and is the foundation for long-term business relationships. Finding a win-win solution requires an understanding of the other person's interests.

Second, it is important to understand the other person's emotions. Emotions drive decisions and behavior, so it is important to be aware of emotions in the other person and, of necessary, to manage those emotions.

Part of my training is designed to develop empathy through mental exercises and sensory awareness.
